English: Building on the oddly angled southwest corner of Ballard Avenue and 22nd Avenue NW in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle Washington. Category 1 building in the Ballard Avenue Landmark District. It was built in 1901 by the Hemrich Bros. Brewing Company and was originally known as the Ankeny Building. It housed two saloons and the Ballard Post office on the ground floor upon completion and would later house furniture stores, grocery stores, and the Ballard Commercial Club. The upstairs was a mixture of office space and hotel rooms, known as the Portland Hotel. Despite the title of this survey, J.C. Penney never occupied this building. The Ballard store opened in 1928 at 2238 Market Street in a building built specifically for their use and was the first Penney's store in Seattle. They remained at that location until closing in 1985. This building underwent a complete restoration into studio apartments that same year.
