This American Civil War raid took place during August and September 1862. Confederate troops led by Major General William W. Loring would eventually defeat a Union force commanded by Colonel Joseph A.J. Lightburn, and drove the Union troops from the Kanawha River Valley to Ohio. As part of Loring's master plan, Brigadier General Albert G. Jenkins led a cavalry force that circled behind the the Union outposts and blocked their major route of retreat. During this raid, Jenkins' cavalry became the first Confederate force to enter the state of Ohio. Lightburn and most of his men escaped to the safety of Ohio by taking a different route away from the Kanawha River.
