Joss houses are the temples of Chinese folk religion. They're places for worship of indigenous deities, saints and supernatural beings. Joss houses are distinct from Taoist and Buddhist temples which are institutions administered by Taoist or Buddhist clergymen and are not dedicated to folk deities. Joss houses have no clergy, they're mantained by local people. A particular type of joss house is the ancestral hall.
