Stalin Peace Prize, on a Russian stamp of 1953

The International Stalin Prize for Strengthening Peace Among Peoples was created in 21 December 1949 by the ukaz of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet in honor of Joseph Stalin's seventieth birthday. The prize was mainly awarded to prominent Communists and supporters of the Soviet Union.

Following Nikita Khrushchev's denunciation of Stalin at the Twentieth Party Congress held in 1956, on September 6 the prize was renamed the International Lenin Prize for Strengthening Peace Among Peoples. All previous recipients were asked to return their Stalin Prizes so they could be replaced by the renamed Lenin Prize. But not all winners could return it (for example Bertolt Brecht died before. Perhaps his widow did?).

The en:Stalin Peace Prize (Lenin Peace Prize) was a different honour than the en:USSR State Prize. It should also not to be confused with the en:Lenin Prize.
