English: Lichens are composite organisms consisting of a symbiotic association of a fungus (the mycobiont) with a photosynthetic partner (the photobiont or phycobiont).

This is a main category or subcategory requiring frequent diffusion and maybe maintenance. As many pictures and media files as possible should be moved into the right subcategories. (more information on categories)

Instructions:

1. Categorize the picture according to its species. If that category doesn't exist, you will have to create it. You can check that you are using the currently accepted name, and find all synonyms at the Index Fungorum. You can find the currently accepted taxonomy of any genus at the Outline of Ascomycota - 2007.

Detailed instructions for categorizing lichen pictures
These instructions use the example that you are categorizing a picture of Lobaria pulmonaria
1.	Categorize the picture according to its species by adding the following text at the end of the file: [[Category: Lobaria pulmonaria ]]
2.	If no category exists for that species, the category link at the bottom of the page will appear red: Categories: Lobaria pulmonaria If this is the case, you must create a new category for that species. To do this, click on the red link, then include the following text in the window and click "Save page": [[Category: Lobaria \| pulmonaria ]]
3.	If no category exists for that genus, the category link at the bottom of your newly created species category page will also appear red: Categories: Lobaria If this is the case, you must create a new category for that genus. To do this, click on the red link, then include the following text in the window to categorize it in a family, and click "Save page": [[Category: Lobariaceae ]]
4.	If no category exists for that family, the category link at the bottom of your newly created genus category page will also appear red: Categories: Lobariaceae If this is the case, repeat step 3 to categorize the family in an order. Keep repeating this step at each higher taxon until you get to one that already exists.

2. Put the picture in the gallery for that species. If that gallery doesn't exist, you will have to create it. All galleries of lichen species are placed in the category Lichens, as well as the category for that species.

Detailed instructions for putting lichen pictures in galleries
These instructions use the example that you have a picture of Lobaria pulmonaria that is named Lobaria_pulmonaria.jpg
1.	Go to the gallery for that species of lichen. It will be named according to the binomial name of that lichen (eg. Lobaria pulmonaria). Click "edit" for the Photos section of the page, and insert the following text into the gallery: Image: Lobaria_pulmonaria.jpg
2.	If no gallery exists for that species, you will have to create one. Use the following text to insert the picture, and categorize the gallery: ;Name:''''' Lobaria pulmonaria ''''' Include any additional information, like family, synonyms, etc. ==Photos== <gallery> Image: Lobaria_pulmonaria.jpg </gallery> [[Categories: Lobaria pulmonaria \| ]] [[Categories:Lichens]]

3. If the lichen is only identified to the genus level, categorize it according to its genus, and place it in the gallery for that genus.

4. If the lichen is unidentified, categorize it as Unidentified lichens.

5. If the picture is applicable to lichens in general, categorize it as Lichens. Keep in mind that the Lichens category is not for unidentified lichens.

6. The Lecanorales category should no longer be used as a general repository for lichen photos, as this is neither correct (many lichens are not in this order), nor intuitive (everyone calls them lichens, not Lecanorales).

Maintenance:

As of May 25, 2010, all lichen photos are categorized and in galleries, and all lichen galleries are in the Lichens category. The Cat-Scan tool is useful for finding all lichen files that have been changed or edited after a certain date.
