English: Magpies (喜鵲 / 喜鹊 / Xǐ què) on Chinese numismatic charms symbolise "Happiness" and "marriage" (when they're displayed in pairs). The first character in the Mandarin Chinese word for "magpie" (喜鵲, xǐ què) is synonymous to the Mandarin Chinese word for "happiness" (喜). The association with marriage comes from an old Chinese tale of two celestial lovers who could only meet once a year on a bridge made of magpies.
