The Americas map of the Atlas sive Cosmographicae was based on Rumold Mercator's world map of 1587. It was however created by Michael Mercator (son of Arnold Mercator, nephew of Rumold) after Gerardus Mercator's death, in order to place it in his 1595 Atlas to be published, which is the reason that Gerardus Mercator was often credited with this map design. The map was seemingly reproduced in most editions of the Atlas until the mid-17th century.
