In NATO publication APP-6, standard symbols were defined to represent military organizations and equipment on maps and in electronic systems. All units were represented by a rectangle with width to height dimensions that varied from 1.4x1 to 1.7x1. A 1.5x1.0 rectangle frame was stated as the standard dimension for a friendly unit in the subsequent APP-6A standard.

Blue was the standard colour to indicate friendly. The bi-chrome symbol with a black icon inside a coloured frame can be found in Canadian instructions from January 2000.
