English: "Missorium" is a conventional word of unclear origin referring to a specific artifact: a large, circular, silver or gilt silver plate with an ornate fringe and an embossed decorative motif, which can be Christian or pagan, as in the case of the missorium of Herakles. The silver value implies a non-utilitarian use while the name ("that which is for sending," presumably as a gift) implies a value bestowed, though by whom on whom is unclear.
