Dark plumes are common on some parts of Mars at certain times. It is believed that in the winter a type of transparent dry ice slab develops. In the spring sunlight penetrates the ice and warms the underlying space because it contains dark dust. The increased heat causes dry ice to sublimate (turn directly from a solid to a gas) and greatly increase the pressure. Eventually, the gas with dark dust finds an weak spot and a plume develops. Wind blows the plume into a streak or fan-like shape.
