The beads worn by the unidentified lady are ornamented with the emblems of the Passion. One of them is inscribed 'SAP'. The costume suggests that this painting can be dated to the early years of the 16th century. It resembles costumes in frescoes in the Palazzo Costabili, Ferrara; this association may suggest a Ferrarese origin for the picture. The differences in style between this portrait and some of the artist's other portraits implies that this may be one of his relatively early works.
