In the 19th and early 20th centuries, shore-based rescue boats were widely called lifeboats. The early rescue lifeboats were propelled by oars, a later generation had inboard motors but were otherwise of similar design. The term Lifeboat for a shore-based rescue boat has persisted into modern times in some countries, including Great Britain. This page is for shore-based rescue boats that are or were called lifeboats in their own time and place.
