The shōjō (猩々) is the Japanese transliteration from the Chinese.

The xing-xing (猩猩) is mentioned in the Bencao Gangmu ("Compendium of Materia Medica"), and identified as referring to the orangutan; the compiling medicinalist (Li Shizen) writes that xing-xing (猩猩) was formerly written sheng sheng 狌狌,[1][2] hence, Unschuld emends the authentic pronunciation of 猩猩 to be "sheng sheng".[2]

Thus the sheng sheng 狌狌 mentioned in the Shan Hai Jing, etc., may be categorized here also. Note its translator Strassberg does the opposite of Unschuld and reads 狌狌 as xingxing.[3] The beast's name is rendered into English as live-lively by Birrell.[4]
