The excavator of the Church of St. Stephen, M. Piccirillo, put the thesis forward that this was not a watchtower or other profane building, but the tower of a stylite. An argument for the thesis might be that the tower has no staircase, so leaving it would be difficult. Nearby are the remains of a church. A bit further a building may have been a watchtower, but it has also been suggested it was a monastery.
