English: the Old Slave Tree is a large oak tree in George, Western Cape. It is one of the biggest (height: 24 m, trunk diameter: 1.81 m, crown diameter: 27.4 m) oak trees in the southern hemisphere and one of South Africa's Champion Trees, declared as protected under Section 12 of the National Forests Act of 1998 by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
The tree is located front of the Tourism Bureau in York street and was planted in 1811 by Landdros van Kervel. The reason for the name is an old lock attached to the tree. The legend was that the lock was used to chain slaves to the tree when the site was still occupied by the jail. But the chain and lock were actually used to secure the roller used for the clay tennis court.
