Urushi-e (lacquer picture) usually refers to ukiyo-e woodblock prints that use fish or animal glue (nikawa) to create black shiny areas that were often embossed. These prints was mostly produced around the 1720's and 1730's, but there are also examples from the Meiji Period. It can also refer to paintings using lacquer on paper or on silk and also to panels with lacquer pictures painted on them.
