Many of the images in this category might appear on first inspection to be of two story buildings; they are not. Traditional house building practice -- in Queensland especially but it happens elsewhere in Australia -- has been to elevate the main floor well above ground level, usually on timber posts.
The height above ground can vary considerably, from a few tens of centimetres to several metres. The style of house known as a Queenslander provides the type example but many other buildings have similarly raised main floors.
