{{URAA artist}}[edit]

Given that the artist died in 1944 I'd say the URAA tag is no longer applicable in 2019. His work should be considered {{PD-old-70}} since 2015. --Zenwort (talk) 21:46, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Zenwort: If only it were that simple. Copyright law is complex and, in the case of Maillol, it is further complicated by French wartime copyright extensions and the URAA. In short, the extensions had Maillol's works out of the public domain in France at the time of the URAA restoration date (January 1, 1996). Because all of Maillol's works were published before 1978, the result is that they don't go into the public domain in the US until 95 years after their publication. That means, as of today, all of his works published from 1924 onward are under copyright protection in the US. Maillol died in 1944; hence, his complete oeuvre won't be in the public domain until 2039 (95 years after his death since he was creating sculptures up to the time of his death). This means that many of Maillol's greatest works (including all of the works that were modelled by Dina Vierny) are going to remain copyright protected for quite a while. I don't know what Wikimedia is going to do about this because there are hundreds of photos in Commons that violate copyright. It is ironic that all of his works are in the public domain in France. This article provides a succinct explanation: Copyright restoration and foreign works: be careful. -- Rrwagner59 (talk) 14:29, 2 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There was a lot of activity and discussion around this topic in Wikimedia years ago, but recently this issue seems to be under radio silence. In the mean time, files of URAA-protected works continue to be uploaded and files not in the US public domain happily sit in Wikimedia Commons with no action being taken to identify or remove them (thankfully, in my opinion). You can read about what Wikimedia members were doing and discussing a while back at the URAA-restored copyrights project and discussion pages. -- Rrwagner59 (talk) 14:05, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Jean-Frédéric: You were active in this area years ago. What is the current status of this issue in Wikimedia Commons? -- Rrwagner59 (talk) 14:36, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
