Subcategorization

This category should be subcategorized by districts, instead of having towns in this state category directly. I went ahead and populated Category:Biberach, Baden-Württemberg. But I wonder if that is the right name. Counties in the United States use, for example, Category:Eagle County, Colorado. So perhaps it should be Category:Biberach District, Baden-Württemberg, or maybe Category:Landkreis Biberach, Baden-Württemberg. User:dbenbenn 23:54, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

The correct name would be Category:Landkreis Biberach, Baden-Württemberg. The Landkreis scheme is by far inferior to a scheme with all towns and villages in one category, since it doesn't add much functionality and makes it impossible to find categories quickly. --AndreasPraefcke 13:14, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

The functionality it adds is that you can see articles for close-by places in the same place. Category:Colorado used to have town subcategories directly, and it was a mess. The non-town categories got hidden, too. It was much improved when all the towns got moved to county subcats.

I don't really understand your comment about it being "impossible to find categories quickly". In Category:Colorado, for example, it's easy. To find Minturn, for example, I just go to Category:Minturn, Colorado. I suppose if you know the first few letters of a town name, but don't know the exact spelling, it would be easier to find given a huge list ... In that case, though, you simply go to Category:Villages in Germany or Category:Cities in Germany.

To put it another way: if you are against subcategorizing states by district, shouldn't you also be against subcategorizing Germany itself by state for the same reasons? Currently, how do you find a town if you don't know what state it's in? User:dbenbenn 20:49, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
