National consideration[edit]

The legal definition of Catalonia is the current Statute of Autonomy:

"In reflection of the feelings and the wishes of the citizens of Catalonia, the Parliament of Catalonia has defined Catalonia as a nation by an ample majority. The Spanish Constitution, in its second Article, recognises the national reality of Catalonia as a nationality." (end of the Preambule, see the full english version: [1])

This text "in exercise of the inalienable right of Catalonia to self-government" was proposed by the Catalan Parliament, approved by the Constitutional Committee of the Congress of Deputies of Spain and ratified by the people of Catalonia in referendum in 2006.--Friviere 10:29, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Besides that excerpt of the introduction, the same Statute also says this:
"ARTICLE 1: Catalonia, as a nationality, exercises its self-government constituted as an autonomous community in accordance with the Constitution and with this Estatut, which is its basic institutional law."
ARTICLE 3.2: Catalonia has its political and geographical space of reference in the Spanish State and the European Union, and it incorporates the values, principles and obligations implied by being a part thereof.
We must not forget this. In addition, we must also remember that the text is nowadays not already ratified by the Constitutional Court, that is studying its eventual constitutional legality. It is good to have all the information...--Balbo 11:08, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
