A proposal
[edit]Currently there are three alternative ways to name churches in Naples:
- Category:Sant'Agostino alla Zecca (name of the church in Italian, no name of the town);
- Category:Chiesa Anglicana in Naples (name of the church in Italian, name of the town in English with "in");
- Category:Chiesa dell'Annunziata (Napoli) (name of the church in Italian, name of the town in Italian, without "in").
I suggest to adopt a uniform way to categorise as follows:
- Name in Italian, unless there is an English name which is generally used in the English-speaking world (this could be the case for "Chiesa anglicana", which is a non-specific name, which could become "Anglican church").
- Name of the town always added after the name of the church, because the same names repeat again and again in the 8000+ municipalities of Italy. It is preferable to put the name after all the church names, by default, even when they have a rather peculiar name, so to have a uniform rule which will make it easier to guess what the name is without checking each time. In my experience, when you have scores of churches whose name you have to remember, it's better to have a general rule, valid for all of them, rather than reminding by heart which ones have (Naples) after the name and which ones have not. Let's have (Naples) for all of them.
- Use of parenthesis (Naples) rather than of "in", which is rather used for broader categories ("Churches in Naples", "Streets in Milan"...) than for single monuments.
- Name of the town, "Naples", always in English, as per Wikipedia's general rule.
Therefore my suggestion is that the standard form be: Category:Chiesa dell'Annunziata (Naples), with the sole exceptions of cases such as Category:Anglican church (Naples).
To move from the old to the new category, after creating it of course, and after an agreement has been reached, it is sufficient to ask a bot to make the job by placing, in our case, {{move|:Category:Chiesa dell'Annunziata (Naples)}} at the beginning of the page. It will take some time since bots are overburdened. Please reply to this proposal. --User:G.dallorto 18:31, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
