Category talk:Gudvangen (ship, 1969)

I think the category name is misleading because the ship got the present name "Gudvangen" in the year 2000, 31 years after it was put into operation as "Masfjord". Category:Gudvangen (ship, 1969) is definitely wrong, Category:Gudvangen (ship, 2000) might be better. The best solution is probably to categorize the images as Category:IMO 6924313 and use the ship name categories as redirects. Regards, BjørnN (talk) 21:25, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose it depends how one reads the year.
We noticed that Wikipedia articles in different languages tend to use different formats and names for articles about the same ship. Even languages that do include years don't necessarily use the all same year.
To make it simple, for Commons, we decided to use the name as visible in the photographs as category name. The year is the year the ship was completed. For full details, see Category:Ships by name. --  Docu  at 21:44, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The conventions described are ok. However, the category qualifyer should be (ship, 2000), not (ship, 1969). Regards, BjørnN (talk) 13:02, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
