Discussion

How do you plan on porting existing description pages, i.e. licenses and categories? --Dschwen (talk) 18:01, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have to put that all in manually; The script has safeguards to ensure you do this. This information is avalible on the file pages on en, so it is easy enough to get it or fill it in. Mdann52 (talk) 19:10, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know CommonsHelper2? If you are doing this manually anyways this tool would probably save you work and be a better choice than a simple perl based file upload bot. CommonsHelper2 will also generate an accepted policy compliant file description (even suggesting categories). If you try to do all that by yourself you are reinventing the wheel and probably looking at a lengthy trial-feedback loop. --Dschwen (talk) 20:51, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am aware of that tool, however whenever I use it, it seems to fail to work,. Out of about 10 images I have tried to upload, only 1 has worked. I found this code from a link on the tools page, and decided it looked about right for what I was trying to do. Mdann52 (talk) 21:29, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Have you filed a bug report with Magnus? Are you sure you have used version 2 and not the old MoveToCommons assistant? --Dschwen (talk) 21:51, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You do not have much experience on Commons (~30 edits). Are you sure you know enough about Commons policy to decide which files should be transferred? --99of9 (talk) 23:35, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

@Dschwen, I have not yet filed a bug report, and have tried both v1 and V2 (In fact, V1 was the one I managed to use sucsessfully!)
@99of9, I am aware that only files licenced under a licence permitting free use, such an CC-BY-CA, and you can't put any "fair use" Files up. Mdann52 (talk) 11:10, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'm gonna have to say bugreport or it didn't happen ;-). It makes more sense to me to invest time in getting a proven tool that is potentailly useful to many contributors back up to work rather than have one person reinvent his personal wheel. While it is reassuring to hear that yuo are aware of the most basic licensing issues there are zillions of points to consider in the transfer from en wp. And it just looks like you are trying to bit off more than you can chew here. --Dschwen (talk) 14:39, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Tried it myself. UploadBot is blocked on commons. I'll investigate. You should at least consider using the CommonsHelper to generate the image description page. --Dschwen (talk) 14:56, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, there is an existing ticket in JIRA from Nov 4th. The developer commented on it and mentioned that commonshelper2 is not quite ready currently. But I just tested CommonsHelper1 and it worked without any problems. --Dschwen (talk) 16:48, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the slow reply. I have tried common helper 1 and 2 over the past week, and they just are not working for me. I can't get on any of the links to submit a bug report either.... Mdann52 (talk) 13:58, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Any update on what is happening with this? Riley Huntley (talk) 09:57, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • CommonsHelper1 works for me. I am very reluctant to grant a bot request for at tool that reinvents an existing wheel (especially a whell as complex as this one). If nobody points me to a bug report for CommonsHelper1 I am assuming it works for everyone else as well and I will close this request as denied (unless another Bureaucrat desagrees). "I tried it and it didn't work" just does not cut it. That is not a bug report. --Dschwen (talk) 17:26, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • Yes, I think I agree with Dschwen. Let's perfect one or two publicly accessible tools (CommonsHelper) rather than proliferate personalized bots that do this differently to one another. Sorry Mdann52 - I really hope you can figure out what the problem is and get it fixed. --99of9 (talk) 11:00, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Declined per discussion above. --99of9 (talk) 11:00, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
