WIKI LOVES AFRICA 2019 THEME: PLAY!
The photo contest around Africa,

Wiki Loves Africa 2019 interpretation and ideas for the theme

The theme Play! encourages the submission of visual representations of joyful and serious games, sport, and recreation in the form of board or mental games, physical fun or contests, playful interactions, theatrical and musical performances, etc. It is intentionally broad and open to interpretation. Play is a range of voluntary, intrinsically motivated activities done for recreational pleasure and enjoyment.

As with last year, there will be two separate prize categories for photos and media that encompass:

  1. Women in sport
  2. Culturally specific or traditional formal forms of play, recreation or events

Interpretation of the theme

Play is commonly associated with children and juvenile-level activities, but play occurs at any life stage, and among other higher-functioning animals as well, most notably mammals. Play can take the form of improvisation or pretense, interactive, performance, mimicry, games, sports, and thrill-seeking, such as extreme or dangerous sports (sky-diving, high-speed racing, etc.).

A game is a structured form of play, usually undertaken for enjoyment and sometimes used as an educational tool. Games are distinct from work, which is usually carried out for remuneration, and from art, which is more often an expression of aesthetic or ideological elements. However, the distinction is not clear-cut, and many games are also considered to be work (such as professional players of spectator sports or games) or art (such as jigsaw puzzles or games involving an artistic layout such as Mahjong, solitaire, or some video games).

The theme of Play can be interpreted within the scope of these ideas:

Please also remember that the theme Play! is not just limited to the representation of people and can also be represented in other ways ... through:

  1. Objects – such as toys, the elements of the games or sports equipment
  2. Animals – animals love to play, especially in their natural environment
  3. Buildings – there are urban and rural spaces and buildings dedicated to play activities (these can include stadiums, playgrounds, sports fields, events)
