WIKI LOVES AFRICA 2021 MEDIA AND PRESS PAGE

Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) is an annual contest where people across Africa can contribute media (photographs, video and audio) about their environment on Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation. Wiki Loves Africa particularly encourages participants to contribute media that illustrate a specific theme for that year. Each year the theme changes and could include any universal, visually rich and culturally specific topic (for example, markets, rites of passage, festivals, public art, cuisine, natural history, urbanity, daily life, notable persons, etc).

Theme for 2021

The theme for the 2014 photo contest was Cuisine. In 2015 it was Cultural Fashion and Adornment. In 2016 it was Music and Dance. In 2017 it was People at work',' in 2019 it was Play!. In 2020, it was Africa on the Move!

The contest in 2021 is the seventh year of the annual contest. The theme is Health + Wellness. The theme Health + Wellness encourages the submission of visual representations that interrogate all those factors that contribute to health and wellness. What is the difference between health and wellness? Health is seen as the state of physical, mental and social well-being in which disease and infirmity are absent, whereas wellness is the state of living a healthy lifestyle through enhanced well-being. Just a few ideas can include: health professionals, medical or health structures and vehicles, medical and health laboratories, diagnostic centres, pathology and medical labs, traditional health practitioners, wellness practices and coaches, teachers, the elements that make up healthy living - water, hygienic practices, exercise, sport. 7 years of Wiki Loves Africa

Wiki Loves Africa is an annual competition that crowdsources photographs, videos and recordings of Africa to form an open licenced archive of materials that tells the story of Africa on Wikipedia through the eyes of its people. Over the last 7 years, Wiki Loves Africa has achieved the following:

Over 64,000 images have been entered by 8,120 competitors from up to 59 countries under a free licence (CC-BY-SA),
The images entered to Wiki Loves Africa are viewed 41 million times each month (May 2020),
Wiki Loves Africa's images from the first 5 years have been viewed 466 million times altogether (May 2020),
Wikimedia communities from 24 African countries have hosted participation events, information sessions and training workshops; this year, the African-Brazilian community also got involved,
Over 250 participation and training events have been held up until 2020,
A Wiki Loves Africa prize-winning image was included in the Journeys Through Our Fragile Heritage exhibition at the UNESCO, Paris (organised by John Cummings, WIR at UNESCO), and
Wiki Loves Africa’s ISA tool created to support Structured Data on Commons won best multimedia tool at the Wikidata Awards 2019.

How the competition is organised

The project is a on-month competition which will start on the 15th February and end on the 30 April 2021. The project runs across the entire continent, however there are 17 local national groups of Wikipedians that have volunteered to host specific actions (training, upload events, communications, etc.) in their countries. These countries are Algeria, Benin, Botswana, Cameroon (with partners ynternet.org), Egypt, Ghana, Guinée, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zambia. In addition, there are several groups of individuals within Africa, and Wikimedia groups outside Africa that are (and encouraged to be) involved.

The project is a contest where, after the contest closes, the best media at the continental level are selected and prizes are awarded. An international jury will determine the best entries for the continental competition. Where there are local organising groups, they will decide to organise (or not) judging and local prizes for their country.

Wiki Loves Africa was created and developed, and is managed by the principals at Wiki in Africa, it is funded by the Wikimedia Foundation. Actions in each country are supported by the Wikimedia community in the form of Usergroups and volunteers across Africa.

Winners and prizes

There will be several winners. The international prizes are:

1st prize: US$1000
2nd prize: US$800
3rd prize: US$500
Culturally specific or traditional representations Health + Wellness : US$500
Prize for best quality video: $500

In addition, some of the local national teams will host national ceremonies and national prizes.
