Notice concerning bot request and cleanup script[edit]

  • There will hopefully soon be a bot that moves multiple file versions in the history to Commons.
  • The script User:Magog the Ogre/cleanup.js helps cleaning up file description pages of files transferred to Commons.

Project name[edit]

The file is named File:To Commons.svg and the project is about migration to Commons. Wouldn't it make sense to have another name than "transwiki migration"? That sounds more like a meta-project that does transfers between different projects. But the project here is only about transfers to Commons. And Template:User Wikipedia to Commons is restricted to Wikipedia as a source. Possibilities:

I created Template:User Moving to Commons based on Template:User Wikipedia to Commons. The name matches Commons:Moving to Commons. The template can be used as a basis and renamed and edited, especially after an agreement on the project name is reached. CommonSupporter (talk) 10:21, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Rehman created this project. I would be good to hear his opinion. My favorite alternative name is “WikiProject Transfer to Commons”. --Leyo 20:10, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Leyo, thanks a lot. Would be nice to hear from Rehman. CommonSupporter (talk) 21:34, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi CommonSupporter. Thanks for looking into this. Yes, I'm fine with what Leyo is suggesting, or even any other name as long as people agree to it. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with some time critical real-life tasks, hence I cannot dedicate much time here in the short term. Please do ping me if you need my attention, I will try my best to respond sooner. Best regards, Rehman 17:06, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Page titles affecting the decision or being affected by it[edit]

Instead of "moving" one may like to use "move".

File transfer tools[edit]

@Leyo: just told me "CommonsHelper works fine for projects such as en-WP or de-WP, but faces problems with smaller Wikipedias. BTW: Most transfers from de-WP are being found there (incl. many transfers initiated by me)."

I had no focus on en-WP. If CommonsHelper works fine for en-WP and de-WP, but faces problems with smaller Wikipedias, then it is clear that my transfers generated more problems than transfers from these large WPs. I focus on the small ones. Here is a list of WPs: https://wikistats.wmflabs.org/display.php?t=wp&s=images_asc - 132 WPs without local files, then the ones with few files. The zero-local-media-file-WPs are ideal candidates for template and module sharing and for using Wikidata in lists and infoboxes.

Is FtCG better than CH for small WPs? CommonSupporter (talk) 00:13, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't tried FtCG, so I can't answer your question. Someone else might. --Leyo 20:08, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

FileImporter/FileExporter[edit]

Hey all, over the last year we were working on a feature to make it easier to copy files to Commons from a local wiki with all their original data intact, while documenting the move in the version history - the FileImporter & FileExporter extensions. The project originates from the German-speaking community's Technical Wishlist. The new feature-set is planned to be provided as a beta feature on first wikis soon: test wikis by June 12, first other wikis by June 25 (for now deWP and faWP, and maybe others, if more communities are interested in testing it early). When would be a good time to mention the new option here or also on: Commons:Moving_files_to_Commons, as it is going to work from a few wikis only in this first beta phase? - Thanks a lot, --Birgit Müller (WMDE) (talk) 08:59, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this beta feature has been improved and is now a beta feature on all wikis. Here's more information. We’d be happy to hear your thoughts. The best place for your feedback is the central feedback page. -- Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 12:55, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again, the Fileexporter has been in beta mode for a while now. Currently, 15,000 people on the Wikimedia projects have activated the feature, and more than 12,000 files were imported successfully with this new tool. The first version was improved continuously, based on feedback from its beta testers. Thanks to everyone who gave feedback!
The FileExporter is now a default feature on first wikis. Deployment on more wikis is planned for later this year. -- Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 12:43, 24 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Technical Wishes: FileExporter and FileImporter will become default features on all Wikis[edit]

The FileExporter and FileImporter will become default features on August 5, 2020 on all Wikis. They help you to move files from your local Wiki to Wikimedia Commons, while keeping all original file information (description, source, date, Author, and revision history) intact. The project to improve moving files to Wikimedia Commons originates from WMDE’s 2013 Technical Wishes survey, where it was voted into the top wishes for technological improvements by the German-speaking Wikipedia Community.

How does it work?

1. Step: If you are an auto-confirmed user, you will see a link “Export to Wikimedia Commons” in the toolbar on the local file page.

2. Step: When you click on this link, the FileImporter checks if the file can be moved to Commons. These checks are performed based on the wiki’s configuration page which is created and maintained by each local wiki community.

3. Step: If the file is compatible with Commons, you will be taken to a preview page on Wikimedia Commons, where you can update or add information about the file, such as the description. You can also add the ‘Now Commons’ template to the file on the source wiki by clicking the corresponding check box on the preview page on Wikimedia Commons. Admins can delete the file from the local Wiki by clicking the checkbox ‘delete file on source wiki in my name’. By clicking on the ‘Import’ button at the end of the page, the file is imported to Wikimedia Commons.

If you want to know more about the FileImporter extension or the Technical Wishes Project, follow the links. We are looking forward to answering your questions and getting your feedback on our central feedback page. --For the Technical Wishes Team:Max Klemm (WMDE) (talk) 13:33, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Date was later changed to August 7. I picked a random wiki and I had the option there. --MGA73 (talk) 10:57, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
