Summary[edit]

Description

Muhanad and Ahmad*, both aged 11, from Syria, in school in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, close to the border with Syria.

Muhanad and Ahmad are both from Syria, but they only met when their families fled the conflict there. They now live in makeshift tent shelters in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, and have become best friends.

They hadn't been to school for 2 years because of the conflict in Syria, but they're now going to classes again for a few hours every day, thanks to the UK working in partnership with Save the Children and the Government of Lebanon.

"When I first came here I couldn't understand anything", says Ahmad.

"But now I've been back in school for 2 weeks, I'm learning some Lebanese and some English, and catching up with maths.

"The best thing about being back at school is that I can study again. I want to be a doctor when I'm older, and I really like to study and learn".

Many Lebanese schools are now running 2 shifts a day, providing 'catch-up' accelerated learning classes for Syrian children who've missed out on their education due to the conflict.

This is part of the UK's initiative aimed at preventing Syria's children from becoming a lost generation: www.gov.uk/government/news/greening-syrian-children-must-...

UK aid is supporting NGOs including Save the Children to provide catch-up education to thousands of Syria's children. Many of them have missed more than a year of school due to the conflict, and getting them back into education is crucial prevent them becoming a lost generation.
