Summary[edit]

Description This moai is said to be the Smithsonian moai, taken to the US from Rapa Nui by the USS Mohican. The source of the Smithsonian moai is said to be Ahu O'Pepe. This could be O'Pepe. The volcano in the background is Maunga Pui and the near hill could be Anamarama, which I seem to remember the ahu faced, but it is a long time since I've been to this site, and I'm unable to confirm whether the landscape fits this identification or not. Note the skull. For a surviving example of the practice of placing human remains under moai, see www.flickr.com/photos/189475296@N03/50679505056/.
