Summary[edit]

Description
English: Original (mistaken!) CDC discription:

This is probably the last "variolation" dosage from India during the early 1970s (the description on the bottle, however, is in Urdu).

An early method of controlling smallpox was “variolation”, which is inoculation using live smallpox virus taken from active smallpox lesions. Thereby, producing a mild form of the disease, protecting the individual from future outbreaks.

The label («روح کیوڑا»), however, identifies the vial’s contents as a distilled essence from Pandanus odorifer; see: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Variolation vial India.jpg
