Without warning the vessel slipped its shoes and ran swiftly down theways. A number of workmen under the ship were caught in the blocking. Sevenwere killed and many others seriously injured. 1878. Dr. J. L. Forwood was elected mayor for the third time. April 6, 1878, the City of Para (3548 tons), of the Brazilian Line, waslaunched at Roachs shipyard. It was witnessed by President Hayes, members ofhis cabinet, together with several hundred senators, congressmen, and de)3artmentofficials, who had come from Washington in a special train; also Governor Hastingsand his staff; all the guests of Mr. Roach. They were met by the city officials andconducted to the shipyard in carriages with military escort. The streets werecrowded and fully ten thousand persons were present at the launching. The Moyamensing Hook & Ladder Company was instituted April 7, 1868,and incorporated February 28, 1870. Its first truck and hose carriage was pre-sented to it by the Moyamensing Company of Philadelphia.

The Franklin Fire Company, Xo. 1, was instituted Xovember 30, 1867, andincorporated February 22, 1869. Its first steam fire engine was purcliased in 1874. The Hanley Hose Company was instituted January 12, 1869, and incorporatedFebruary 22, 1869. Its first steam fire engine was owned by tlie city. 1881. James Barton, Jr., was elected mayor. Thursday, February 16, 1882, the Pennsylvania Military Academy liuildingwas totally destroyed by fire. Friday, February 17, 1882, Jacksons Pyrotechnical Manufactory, for whichpurpose the house built by Chief Justice Lloyd, in 1721, and later the birthplaceof Admiral David D. Porter, was then used, took fire and a large stock of fireworksexploded, resulting in the death of eighteen persons and the wounding of fifty-sevenothers. June 27, 1882, the Chester Street Eailway Company was formed, and onFebruary 1, 1883, began operating the road as a horse-car line.
