Changi Naval Base, Singapore (Mar. 23, 2001) -- Admiral Vern Clark, Chief of Naval Operations visits with Sailors for an "All Hands Call" in Singapore. Admiral Clark is here for the opening of the new deep draft pier at Changi, Singapore. The historic arrival in Singapore of USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) marks the first time any U.S. aircraft carrier has moored pier-side in the Lion City. Located at the mouth of the Malacca Strait, Singapore is a strategic location with a high volume of trade traffic. The locally-built facility is the only one in the Southeast Asian region capable of accommodating aircraft carriers. Mooring pier-side facilitates easier maintainance and resupplying for ships.
