Description

Austin-Healey was a British sports car maker established in 1952 through a joint venture between the Austin division of the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and the Donald Healey Motor Company (Healey). Austin Healeys were produced in two sizes, The 'Big Healeys' were; 1953-56 Healey 100, 1956-59 Healey 100-6 and the 1959-71 Healey 3000. The smaller Healeys were the Sprites, built from 1958-71, 1958-61 Mk I; commonly known as the 'Frogeye' Sprite in the UK, because of its distinctive headlights mounted on top of the bonnet. There were no door handles and no boot. Engine; 43hp 848cc 4 cyl from Austin A35 and Morris Minor but with twin SU Carbs. 1961-64 Mk II; new body with a more conventional looking front, headlights in the guards and a squarer, wider grille, still very basic tho, no external handles or locks and the no wind up windows, only perspex side-screens. Larger 56hp 1098cc engine introduced in 1962. A badge engineered MG version was also available, the 'Midget' and the Italian company, Innocenti produced their version, the 950 and 1100 'Spider' from 1961-68 1964-66 Mk III; now with wind up windows, swivelling quarter lights, revised windscreen frame, external handles and door locks.

1966-71 Mk IV; 65hp 1275cc from the Cooper S, still chrome mesh grille. 1969 facelift; black mesh grille, black sills and from 1970, black windscreen frame and wipers. The Midget continued on until 1980.
