Pace Car White. Lee Iacocca, Ford's General Manager, had always invisioned a small sports car to be the next hot item, so Ford introduced the new Falcon based 'Pony Car' the Mustang in April, 1964. For the start only Hardtops and Convertibles were available, the fastback in September, Also at the start engines were; 170 cu in 6 cylinder or 260 cu in V8, after mid year, the 289 V8 was introduced. 1964 Engines; 170 cu in 6 cyl (U Code) and 260 cu in V8 (F Code) The new Mustang was selected to be the Pace Car for the 1964 Indianapolis 500 race. On the first day of production, 3 convertibles were selected, serial numbers, 240, 241 and 242. A Pace Car needed to reach 140mph, so the cars were sent to Holman and Moody where race spec GT40 289 V8s were installed, suspension and cooling was also modified.
