Description

Olympic Blue. The UK built Ford Escort replaced the Anglia in 1968, it was the small car in the UK Ford range. It featured the coke bottle waistline and dog bone shaped grille. The Mk I Escort was built until 1974, replaced by the boxier Mk II. It was available in 2 or 4 door saloon, 3 door estate and van. The base model, the Deluxe got round headlights and rubber flooring, the upmarket Super got rectangular headlights and carpet, 1300E got a wood trim dash, the GT, extra instrumentation, Weber carb and uprated suspension. Other performance models built at the Aveley Plant were, Twin Cam, Mexico, RS1600 and RS2000Engines; 1100, 1300, also 1600, 2000 in performance models

The Twin Cam (with Lotus improved Kent engine) was the 1st then replaced by the RS1600 (with 16 valve Cosworth head and BDA drive), the RS2000 with 2.0 litre Pinto engine was more civilised car than the RS1600, but also used for rallying, the Mexico was aimed more for road use with standard 1600 crossflow engine. The 1600GT was a twin cam Escort sold in Australia.
