| Description |
The Type 89 Lotus Excel, built from 1982 to 1992, is a front-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car designed and built by Lotus. It was based on the design of the earlier Lotus Eclat, which itself was based on the earlier Lotus Elite II. Toyota was a major shareholder in Lotus at this time, parts from the Toyota Supra were used on the Excel. In 1984 the Excel got body coloured bumpers, a louvred bonnet and boot spoiler. Engine was 160hp 2200cc Lotus 912 4 cyl. 1985 upgrades saw wider wheel arches, fog lamps and a revised interior. 1986; Excel SE introduced with HC 180hp engine 1987; Excel SA (automatic) introduced, cruise control and central locking 1988; Engine and chassis upgrades 1989; restyled bonnet, front and rear spoilers added, new wheels and interior trim. 40 Hethel 25th Anniversary Celebration Editions were produced, 35 in green and 5 in red, tan interior and upgraded sound system |
