Summary[edit]
Description2021 Providence City Hall from northwest, 25 Dorrance Street.jpg |
English: Providence City Hall is the center of the municipal government in Providence, Rhode Island, and is located at the southwest end of Kennedy Plaza at 25 Dorrance Street. It was built from 1875 to 1878 and was designed by Samuel J. F. Thayer in the Second Empire style. In 1975, after concerns began to grow about possible demolition, Mayor Buddy Cianci instigated a full restoration and rehabilitation of the deteriorating building under the guidance of historian and preservationist Antoinette Downing, Frank Mauran III and Irving B. Haynes. The project was completed in the 1990s. (Source: Guide to Providence Architecture) The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and is part of the Downtown Providence Historic District. |
