Description

South Africa: Promoting Awareness that Tuberculosis is Curable

Tuberculosis (TB) is a public health emergency and the leading cause of death in communities with high levels of HIV. South Africa faces one of the world’s most devastating TB epidemics.

HIV-infected people are highly susceptible to TB infection, fueling the transmission and deaths caused by the lung disease. USAID assists highly affected communities in South Africa to increase the number of people getting tested for TB and completing their treatments. Clinic staff, doctors and community volunteers are trained on early detection and treatment of TB, promoting greater awareness that TB is curable.
