English: Dissolving rubber with essential oils
The orange peel or the peel of other citrus fruits contains essential oils that are nonpolar hydrocarbons. The most abundant of them all is limonene. On the other hand, the balloons are made out of rubber that is a polymeric chain usually made out of isoprene units (i.e. cis-1,4-polyisoprene). Isoprene like limonene is nonpolar and it is expected for the limonene to dissolve the polyisoprene. When the balloons are inflated, the polymeric chains are stretched and when they come in contact with a solvent like limonene, the balloon wall will dissolve somewhat. As a consequence, the balloon pops. Performed by the Prof. PhD Miha Bukleski. The planning of the experiment also included the retired Prof. PhD Vladimir Petruševski and the students Mihail Trajkov and Darko Stojčev, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Кората од портокалот и другите цитрусни овошја содржи есенцијални масла кои претставуваат неполарни јаглеводороди. Во нив најзастапен е лимоненот. Од друга страна, пак, балоните се составени од гума која претставува полимер на изопренот (cis-1,4-полиизопрен). Изопренот, слично како и лимоненот е неполарен, па се очекува дека лимоненот може да го раствори полиизопренот. Кога балоните се надувани, полимерот е растегнат, па кога ќе дојде во контакт со растворувач, како лимоненот, ѕидот од балонот ќе се подраствори и балонот ќе пукне. Изведено од Проф. д-р Миха Буклески. Во планирањето на опитот, исто така беа вклучени пензионираниот Проф. д-р Владимир Петрушевски, и студентите Михаил Трајков и Дарко Стојчев, Институт за хемија, ПМФ, УКИМ, Скопје, Македонија. |
