Summary[edit]

Description

Apollo 16 Hasselblad image from film magazine 120/V - Lunar orbit.
This photo is used in Figure 4-55 of the Apollo 16 Preliminary Science Report (NASA SP-315), which has the following caption:

Oblique view southwestward across King Crater. The wishbone-shaped central peak and the terraced southern wall are clearly visible in this 250-mm Hasselblad photograph. The crater near the upper left corner of this frame is Abul Wafa, which is centered near latitude 1.5° N, longitude 116.5° E.

This photo is used again in Figure 29-95 of the Report, which has the following caption:

Oblique view of the interior of King Crater, emphasizing the similarity between the southern part of the central peak and the material slumped on the southern wall of the crater. This alinement and other factors suggest that the unique shape of the central peak of King Crater is caused by a preexisting tabular body that was excavated by formation of the crater.

This photo was also used in Figure 150 of Apollo over the Moon: A View from Orbit (NASA SP-362), which has the following caption:

The similarity in appearance of the southern part of the central peak and the slump terraces on the southern wall of the crater is emphasized in this oblique view of the crater King. The parallelism of the two arms of the central peak and the southern segment of the peak suggests that the unique shape of the structure is caused by a preexisting tabular body that was excavated during the formation of the crater (El-Baz, 1972b). Numerous conical structures with summit pits are present on the crater floor in the lower right part of the photograph.-F.E.-B. (Farouk El-Baz)
