other labors, he wasfully and most usefully employed. There wasa constantly increasing demand for books, sothat by the spring of 1843, it was impossibleto procure a supply from the press and binderyin Smyrna, with the limited funds they had, tomeet seasonably all the orders that came in.Eight or ten booksellers at the capital werekept constantly supplied, and the products ofthe press were also sent to almost every part ofthe interior, even into Russia, Georgia, andPersia. An Armenian archbishop near Odessa,on receiving some of these, expressed the great-est joy ; and remarked that they ought to begrateful towards those who were engaged inpreparing such excellent books for their coun-trymen. More than 40,000 volumes and tractswere issued from the Smyrna depot to the dif-ferent stations, during the year 1842. Thetranslation of the whole Old Testament intothe Armeno-Turkish language, to which Mr.Goodell had devoted his undivided attention andstrength for many years, was happily completed

And by its side maybe placed an edition of the New Testament inthe modern Armenian, published about thesame time in Smyrna, as revised by Mr. Adger.The expense of the latter work was defrayedby the British and Foreign Bible Society,while that of the forme*- came from the Ameri-can Bible Society. One of the most striking ti-aits of the re-formed Armenians is, their reverence andlove of the Word of God. Some have beenknown to sit up all night to read and study theBible, when it was first furnished to them inan intelligible language; and the prevailingdesire of all seemed to be, to understand whatGod teaches through his Word, and to conformtheir belief and jiractice wholly to his teach-ings.
