a clearer and better idea ofthis celebrated bay than could be acquired fromany description. According to the observations of M. Roussin,the lighthouse on the Cape is in lat. 13° 0 30 S.,long. 38° 30 W. The opposite side of the en-trance to the Baj- is formed by the island ofTaporica, distant from Cape St. Antonio about 2£leagues. But a bank along the shore of theisland narrows the passage for large ships to abouttwo-thirds this distance. Another bank runsS.S.W. from Cape St. Antonio about H league.Within, the bay expands into a capacious basin,having several islands and harbours, the depth ofwater varying from 8 and 10 to 40 fathoms,affording ample accommodation and secure an-chorage for the largest fleets. There is another entrance to the bay, on the westside of the island of Taporica; but it is narrow, in-tricate, and at its mouth has not more than 6 feetwater. Several rivers have their embouchure inthe bay, which generally occasions a current to set BAH I A ( B AY OF ALL SAINTS)

The lighthouse at theextremity of the Cape has no great elevation, andcannot be seen at a distance of more than 3 or 3ileagues. The usual place of anchorage is abreast ofthe city north and south of Fort do Mar. The city is partly built on the beach, but prin- BALANCE 75 cipally on pretty high ground immediately con-tiguous. The public buildings, particularly thechurches, are numerous, and some of them magni-ficent ; but the streets are narrow, ill paved, andfilthy. Population estimated at from 125,000 to160,000. The city is defended by several forts,but none of them are of great strength. Wesubjoin— An Account specifying the Quantities and the Destination of the Principal Articles of Native Produce shipped from Bahia in 1866. Great Britain France - Sweden - Portugal ....
