ndrical reservoir of metal takes the place ofthe hot-water jars in the lower compartment of thecouveuse. This reservoir is filled by means of ametallic funnel fastened to one end of the box andcommunicating with the cylinder through a metallictube. The overflow of the cylinder is provided for by acurved metallic tube at the lower part of thecylinder beneath the inlet through which thereservoir is filled. The air enters by a register on one side of thecouveuse instead of at the end, as in Tarniersapparatus. The other portions of the apparatus arethe same as Tarniers. The metallic cylinder is capable of holding tenlitres of liquid (a litre is a little over a quart). Tostart the apparatus, about five litres of boiling 190 OBSTETRICAL NURSING. water should be poured in, after which three litresmay be poured in every four hours. When tenlitres are contained in the cylinder,*the overflow-pipe carries off the excess. Auvard suggestshaving two vessels, capable of holding three litres Fig. 31.
