ca; andalso extends to Asia, being to be found in Siberia, AsiaMinor, Persia, and India. It is a very local species. In Yorkshire a few have beenmet with near Burlington, Hebden Bridge, and Halifax;about Don caster it is more common, and at York, where,in the Foss Islands, it has been known occasionally tobreed; near Leeds one, at Calverley. The Rev. R. P. Alingtontells me that it is common in a small piece of fen calledThe small drains, in the parish of North Coats, Lincolnshire;but he has never seen it after October. A. Fuller, Esq. alsoinforms me of five shot at Tetney, near Great Grimsby, 1851.In Norfolk it is not uncommon at Belton, and other places,and breeds about several of the Broads. One was founddead at Thetford, in October, 1847, which had been killedby flying against the wires of the telegraph. In Surrey, thebird is stated to have been met with near Godalming. SPOTTED CKAKE. 73 has been noted in Devonshire, as also in Dorsetshire, Sussex,Hampshire, and Cambridgeshire, though rather rarely, inwhich county it has been ascertained to breed, as it probablydoes in many others: a nest and eggs were taken in theFens, in 1853, as T. Gr. Bonney, Esq. has informed me. Afew have occasionally been seen near Plymouth; one wasobtained in Efford Marsh. In Cornwall, one was seen inthe market at Falmouth, in November, 1848; and inOctober, 1849, one was shot at Swanpool. In Northumber-land, Mr. Selby has put up as many as six at a time, butmost of them young birds. In the year 1853 they appear to have been unusuallyabundant. The Hon. T. L.
