The general summonswas now issued; and the Christians assembled near the Galileanvillage Seplioria, where there was a fine spring of water. WhenSaladin himself came into the district, biuued the city of Tiberias,and invested its citadel, which was defended by the Countess ofTripoli, Count Raymond recommended that the host should awaitthe attack in this favorable place. Saladin surrounded this, and by setting fire to the dry grassand brush aggravated the sufferings of the Franks. When theyoffered battle on the following day, he retreated, and drew them, allbut worn out through thirst and scorching heats, after him for hoursbefore he accepted their challenge. July 5, 1187, closed with thecomplete overtlirow of the Christians, who were deliberately cut topieces by the embittered victors. The Templars, in especial, sufferedterribly, Saladin causing such of them as fell into his hands to bebeheaded, and slaying with his own hand the faithless Renaud deChätillon. The Franks bewailed above all the capture of the remainsof the Sacred Cross. Among the prisoners was King Guy. Ray-mond of Tripoli escaped, more than ever suspected of treacherouscorrespondence with Saladin, and died shortly after
