ch the prisoners sat. It was wellknown that one of the twelve guns contained a blank car-tridge. At the command Fire both of the victims fellacross the boxes without a struggle and lay as if theywere sleeping. On examination by the surgeon, it wasfound that six balls went through one man and fivethrough the other. In the quaint and honest words of the narrator, Lieu-tenant Peterson was highly respected and the guard werehonored by their well doing, and doing their duty in sosoldierlike a manner. The last of Comrade Cranes items is that Companies Band C on May 8, went from Natchez to Brookhaven,Miss., to protect the people. He says, they wentwith a cheerful step and a rejoicing heart, and campedthree miles from the citv. The next day the U. S. pay-master gave tliem six months* pay, and they as easilycame into the city to have a good time, and they hadit, too. MAJOR JAS. R. NEWELL. New Hampshire Volunteers. 541 Personal. — Maj. James R. Newell was born inBrookfield. on December 5, 1839. He enlisted in theEighth New Hampshire Volunteers, in 1861, as sergeant,and served faithfully during the war, participating in overforty actions. On June 14, 1863, then a first lieutenantand acting as captain, he led his company in the dis-astrous charge on the rebel works at Port Hudson, wherehe was severely wounded and captured. Escaping on July4, he was engaged in nearly every battle fought by hisregiment in the Department of the Gulf, and also did ad-mirable service as a scout amid great difficulties. Forpersonal gallantry he was promoted to all offices fromsergeant to major. He died in Wolfeboro, N. H., MarchI, 1880, and the G. A. R. post at that place is named inhis honor. In April, 1869, Major Newell married Miss Fannie M.Beacham. of Ossipee, N. H., who survives him, and since1882 has been a missionary in Constantinople, Turkey. General Brayman bein
