The most tangible evidence ofthe extent of the business of theAmerican Fur Company is foundin the large warehouse solidlybuilt for the storage of peltries,and which has been known formany years as the John JacobAster Hotel. The proprietorproudly exhibits the ancient ac-count and correspondencebooks. The many letters, laboriouslyand neatly copied into these oldvolumes, form very interestingreading, although one is stirredto anger at discovering themutilation and defacement ofmany pages by scribbling foolsshown. The Astor strong box may be seen at Col. Fentons curiosity store. During much of the period defined by the writer, quoted as the fifth epoch,Mackinac Island was a port of considerable importance.
