ISTIAN ART. Chap. III. resembles the work of Naddus Ceccharelli and Lippo Memmi,being copiously adorned with tracery and gold. A large life size Virgin ascending amongst angels withfive prophets at each side of the arch of the niche, paintedflatly, but damaged by varnishes partakes of this characterand may be seen in the Gallery of Sienna,1 where like-wise, a Virgin and child amongst angels in the same stylemay be studied.2 These two pictures, however, are underthe name of Lorenzetti. 3 1 No. 63 of Sienna Catal. 2 Ibid. The companionship of Lippo and Simone clearly datesfrom a time antecedent to that which brought them intorelationship by the marriage of the latter. Lippo was born atSienna,l and though he was at times content to take uponhimself the mechanical portion of Simones altarpieces,he was not the less an artist of the same school as hisbrother-in-law. They had a common workshop at Sienna,yet they frequently undertook separate commissions; themost important of which to Lippo seems to have beenthat of 1317 for the adornment of the Palazzo del Podestaat S. Gimignano. Sixteen years before, Dante, as envoyof the Florentine republic, had solicited in the very hallwhich Lippo came to adorn, the aid of S. Gimignano infavour of the Tuscan league. The same podesta whonow employed Lippo, had promised that aid to Florence;and now that peace had succeeded to long years of strife,Mino, of the Tolomei of Sienna, sought to rival the
