Title
A post medieval iron horseshoe dating 16th - 18th century.
Description
English: A post medieval iron horseshoe dating 16th - 18th century. The horseshoe is U-shaped, with the branches being thicker and tapering towards the heel. The heel-end of the branches are squared and possibly thicker on one side, indicating calkins. However, the level of iron corrosion product may be the cause of the differential thickness. This horseshoe is from the rear hoof of a horse as indicated by its narrow shape. There is a groove (or fuller) on one side of the horseshoe into which the nail holes are placed. There are only three nail holes visible, being rectangular in shape. The presence of a fuller dates the horseshoe to the post medieval period (Clark, 1995, 82).There is a large amount of corrosion product across the entire surface of the object, with much of it in the fuller.

Dimensions: length: 116.47 mm; width: 102.92 mm; thickness: 9.33 mm; length of nail holes: 8.52 mm; width of nail holes: 4.48 mm; weight: 315g.
