China and Indo Chinaanil Dutch jiossessions in Asia form the W. mainland and archipelagoes fronted bythe NW. and S. coastline of the Philippine Is. The remaining 12 smaller islands ofthe Mariana group, between lat. 14° 5 and 21° N., Ion. 144° and 146° E., for amoney consideration paid to Spain by Germany, have been transferred to the pro-tection of the latter power. The nearest of these islands to Guam is Rota I., 800 ft,high, 30 naut. m. (34; st. m.) NNE. AREA. The island is 32 st. m. N. by E. to S. by W., and 9 m. E. and W., extrememeasurements.
