The human digestive tract. 28 THE TEETH. MECHANICAL ACTION OF THE MOUTH. In the mouth the food is submitted to a twofold prep-aration. It is divided by the mechanical action of theteeth, and also simultaneously mingled with liquids se-creted from the salivary glands. In man the number of temporary teeth is twenty, tenin each jaw. They are arranged in three classes—fourincisors, two canines, and four molars for the upper andlower jaw respectively. The permanent teeth, eventual-ly substituted for these temporary ones, are thirty-two in number, classifiedfor each jaw as fourincisors, two canines,four bicuspids, andsix molars.
